A Day of Beauty…

There is something about the heart of a mom that truly draws me in.

To hear her talk about her children.

To see her interact with her children.

To feel the love, devotion and protection that she gives to her children.

Last Saturday, Amber and I had the opportunity to spend the day with twenty moms.   These are gals who probably feel that life has handed them some curve balls.  They know that each day, in order to have a brighter future,  they have to fight hard just to survive and to provide…for themselves and their children.

They are a group of women who have an appreciation for the opportunity to share a home with other moms where they have a safe place to live, raise their children, lay their head down at night.  A place where they grow and work their way through transitional housing as they get their feet back on the ground.

These were gals who loved to talk about their children.

Many of them are taking college classes.  Others are working full time.  One mom said that she works nights, getting home at 6 a.m. so that she could be there for her kids during the day.  She does this 5-7 days a weeks, living on 3-4 hours of sleep each day.    Another gal mentioned that one of the moms living in the home loves to cook {domesticity at its best} and often when she gets home from a long day of work, with children in tow, there is a nice, aromatic, hot meal waiting there for her.

These are women who are working hard each day to make a better life for themselves and their children.

This was also a group of ladies who love to be pampered {don’t we all}.  On Saturday, at the YWCA in Spokane, there was an area set up just for them with volunteers ready to; do hair, nails, make-up and childcare.

When I first met Melanie and heard about this back in January, I also heard a little about these gals and the ladies who work with them each week, helping them to live a better life, to keep going, to be survivors.

Conversations like that make my heart swell.

{i find that when my heart swells my eyes fill with tears…Mmmm ~ not sure how that happens, it just does!}

My mind went right to Amber.

Amber loves people.

Amber loves to photograph people.

Amber’s heart tends to {swell} at the thought of people who’ve been handed a few ‘curve balls’ but desire to fight their way through each day in order to make a better life.

Although Amber loves to be paid for taking photographs of people, I know her well enough to know that she would pay {gas, travel, food, etc…she drove 10 hours that day} to have the opportunity to bless these gals with a professional photo of themselves.  I showed up to be Amber’s assistant!

It was fun to see these ladies ‘light up’ as we worked our way through the day and all of the above-mentioned things…hair, make-up, talking about kids, nails, hair, talking about kids, make-up, talking about kids….photographs!

During that process, my heart swelled…many times!

I was able to take the portraits and make a charm for each gal!

You can go HERE to see Amber’s post on the day!

Project Beauty Share is a program in Spokane where make-up can be brought that is brand-new or slightly used.  They sanitize it, bundle it and disperse it to gals who otherwise could not afford it.

thank you Amber for sharing all of your pictures with me…except the charm pics 🙂

  3. This was so neat and I’m so glad you could be involved. I know your heart of compassion and what a great way to use it. You may never know the “lift” this day gave those ladies, but God does and He will use it in their lives.
