Mergie

Here is a picture of my great grandma’s dress form. It was very rustically made by my great grandpa. The body is paper mache’ stuffed with old newspaper and mounted on a cast iron base with a big old bolt running through her neck. I love it. It’s full of character and was made with love. When I look at it, I often think of how different my life must be from hers. I love to sew. I’m sure she also loved to sew but it was probably done more out of necessity than for fun. She was a very devoted wife and mother. I’ve always called this girl Mergatroid (how do you spell that???) but my grandma’s name was Sophie. My childhood memories of her are faint but I know she was a wonderful and faithful woman.

One of the things I look forward to is spending a lot of time with my grandmothers from past generations, for these are the women I come from…this will happen in another time and another place…
